Béla Barktók is considered one of the preeminent composers in the 20th century. The Mikrokosmos collection is truly a gift to musicians for centuries to come -- it is a sound pedagogical piano method, and it provides a glimpse into the genius of this man.
It's not very often that a method book for young musicians can also be regarded with such esteem by scrutinizing scholars. Bartók's piano method is simple and beautiful. Students enjoy it, yet it is a common resource in advanced university counterpoint courses.

My personal copy was published in 1987, the "New Definitive Edition" which includes a preface written by Peter Bartók.
