This piece has a strict form but, in most other respects, is indeterminate. Any performance of this piece, in effect, is co-composed by myself and the people who perform it.The piece should be approachable by any percussionists who can simultaneously count and follow basic performance instructions...hmm...ages 16 and up perhaps? (Or 8 and up...if you're more optimistic than I.)

Matthew, who suggested I add this piece to my website, says this about Merlin:It's really something that every percussion player should listen to, just to hear how crazy capable a marimba really can be!I agree with his assessment. The first time I heard Merlin was a performance by Nancy Zeltsman in Flagstaff, Arizona. I was amazed by both the composition and her incredible performance of it.
Space Model is a fascinating composition. In essence, the piece is designed such that the percussionist performs with him or herself. Imagine this:Player performs 1st movement.Player performs 2nd movement while the audience is also hearing a pre-recorded performance of the 1st movement.Player performs 3rd movement while the audience is also hearing pre-recorded performances of the 1st and 2nd movements. As if that idea isn't cool enough already, the sounds and energy in this piece are equally as breathtaking.

This piece is inspired by electronic music and computer controlled instrumentation. It is written for four percussionists, each playing 1 drum, and consists entirely of measured double stroke rolls and accents.
"These five pieces will definitely be enjoyed by all who come in contact with them. For the player of marimba and vibraphone, they will provide valuable insight into different styles and kinds of music, as well as prove to be excellent for developing four mallets technique and improvisation. For the mallet or percussion recital, these pieces can be played as solos or creatively arranged into various kinds and sizes of groups for programming variety and excitement. These pieces are simply great deal of fun to play and listen to! If you want to involve your audience in your performance and make them move and dance to the music, these pieces are the answer. I know you will enjoy them as much as I do."Reviewed by Gordon Stout: provided to my website courtesy of Bart Quartier.
"While most composers are pianists, it is always heartening to see other instrumentalists composing. Bart Quartier plays marimba and vibraphone, and his music always brings out certain specific values, such as the importance of rhythms. He also displays a receptively open mind to other types of music in terms of form. Because of the variety in tonality and atmosphere that permeates this album, the player is led to progress in a stimulating manner."Daniel Goyone, provided to my website courtesy of Bart Quartier.
